This book is designed to help young children try new foods (especially vegetables) and to finish off their meal.As parents of two young boys, we found that rather than enjoying each other's company at family mealtimes, we were constantly encouraging our kids to eat certain foods. This often ended up in a frustrating struggle to help them eat up their vegetables and salad. We made a game of it by getting the boys to imitate animals in the wild - and they were motivated by knowing the goal was only a few mouthfuls away. They loved making a “bing” noise to indicate that their mouthful was finished and we could turn the page to the next hungry animal. The book was born. We hope you have the same luck! Steven Jenkins and the Jenkins Family.
Big Mouth was written by Steven Jenkins, the father of a 2 and 4 year old, to encourage and motivate his children to eat some of the food that his wife Julie (regularly) or he (irregularly) prepared. Steven's friend Karen Sheppard who has also has two young children, illustrated the book with the happy and hungry animals. There are eleven animals, a different one for each page. The same animals who in real life would never dare sit and stare at their food! Another of Steve's friends Kate Hunter (a mother of three children under 6) made the words sing!
Big Mouth book acknowledges that it is the parents decision on what food to serve to their children. Similarly, it is the child's choice to eat all of the meal, some of it or none of it. This book is designed to create a relaxed environment where the adult can provide attention to the child and the child can be focused on the meal. We also believe that by promoting healthy eating as a fun activity, children will learn to do it all by themselves.
